To see the “whole” picture, conventional xrays limits our ability and can be misleading to see if there is adequate bone for implant placement. Trying to identify where arteries enter the lower jaw and other places, is no small matter. According to Implant Tribune there have been 9 reported cases of a severed lingual artery, which is life threatening, during the implant procedure that was 2mm or greater in diameter. There are a plethora of findings when dentists look at xrays which include apical radiolucencies frequently yielding endodontics and crown work treatments, cysts, supernumerary teeth, impacted teeth, mucosal thickenings in sinuses and plenty more. Whichever xrays that are recommended to the patient is not the main point here, the responsibility of the treating dentist is to find and diagnose the entire view of images and to notify patients of any other additional findings.
