Dexamethasone for Pain Control
Posted on 9/7/2020 by Greg Kammeyer
According to Inside Dentistry 2019 the most preferred postoperative prescription is taking the mix of ibuprofen and acetaminophen every 6 hours for 24 hours after procedures to help with the sudden and severe orofacial pain. The addition of the steroid dexamethasone, administered orally or preferably injection administered submucosally and near the area of treatment either before or after procedures can help control pain and the comfort of the patient during surgeries. Use 4mg subcutaneous after local anesthetic at that site. This recipe can also reduce the need for narcotic medication afterward. I have used this in restorative and surgical practice routinely.
