Protocol for antibiotic prophylaxis at implant placement
Posted on 9/21/2020 by Greg Kammeyer
The study was to see what might be considered the “best” antibiotic protocol to prevent early implant failures. According to J Clin Periodontol 2019 a meta-analysis was run to find what the best would be. A total of 1,693 patients were studied and the highest possibility at 32.5% of being the “best” to help prevent implant failure was a single dose of 3 g of amoxicillin given 1 hour before treatment. With that being said, if 2 g of amoxicillin were given it would have only a probability of 0.2% to be the best. So to know what would be the “best “is still unknown since there is insufficient evidence, even though this meta-analysis seems to favor the 3 mg dose.
