In this evaluation according to Rabah Nedir, et all IJOMI 2006, 236 patients were treated with 528 implants in an 8 year experience in a private practice. There were 55 overdentures and 265 fixed partial dentures cemented or screw retained. Patients had more complications with the removable prosthesis (66%) than the patients with the fixed ones (11.5%). For the cemented and screw-retained prosthesis complication rates did not differ significantly. The prostheses that had an extension cantilever had more complications 29.4% vs 7.9%. With the overdentures, the ball-retained prostheses had a much higher rate of complications in comparison to the bar-retained ones.
Dr. Kammeyer’s notes: Other literature references bear this conclusion out that the focal stress on overdenture attachments cause multiple post delivery problems; short and long term. This may require multiple post-op visits for repair.
