Maxillary Four-Implant-Supported Overdentures Retained by Stud vs Bar Attachment Study
Posted on 11/23/2020 by Greg Kammeyer
This retrospective study that took 3 to 9 years to gather results was comparing placement of four maxillary dental implants followed by restorations with either stud or bar-retained overdentures. A total of 33 patients had 132 implants placed; 18 patients received restorations with four-implant-supported overdentures retained by stud attachments and the remaining 15 patients received the four-implant-supported overdentures supported by bar attachments. The results were 5 implants out of 72 failed for three patients with the stud-retained group at 81.4% and 2 implants out of 60 failed for two patients with the bar-retained group at 86.2% survived. There showed no significant difference between the two attachment groups regarding implant survival rate, peri-implant clinical parameters, marginal bone loss, or prosthetic maintenance treatment. In conclusion of this study, there were no notable differences that were indicated between the clinical outcomes of maxillary four-implant-supported overdentures having either the stud or bar attachment. *Note the implant failure rates are significantly higher than hybrid prosthesis.
