Am I too old for Dental Implants? Dental Implants Cost too Much Money Certainly these are two of the most common questions or statements: “I’m too old”, or “at my age, it’s not worth it”. Age is so relative. Yes, none of us knows how long we will live. I believe this also touches parts of our self-worth with our elective choice, decision making. I’ve had a 92 year old woman that we did full upper jaw treatment on and then she wanted us to find her a man! I’ve had 65 year olds that said: “At my age I am way too old”. My point of view is that they are BOTH right in their beliefs. I’m treating more people that have cancer in remission. I regularly treat people in their 70’s and 80’s, most are healthy and active yet many that have multiple diseases/conditions/medications. The common life style things I note is that they regularly see their MD and/or the regularly exercise some. Most often, I ask them how long you hope to live. And is the quality of your dental health what you want over those years?
With fee, I’ve had a patient the mined gold and diamonds in Liberia, Africa. She had a number of people working for her. She couldn’t afford implant dentistry. I’ve also a bus driver that wanted the best dentistry had to offer and had a janitor at a Catholic Church that took 14 years to get his mouth in top shape. He said he felt great about the process of taking care of himself. I believe that people value different things for different reasons. Not good or bad, right or wrong…simply their choice with elective health care. I believe the dentist’s values, training and experience also enter into what they offer their patients. Often I hear dentists assume that they shouldn’t offer what they think is best, for a number of reasons. Like patients, It is important for dentists to be clear on what matters to them, and most importantly “Why?” I favor implant dentistry because I saw my mom suffer with dentures, grumbling about how she was the last one to finish eating, had limited food choices and I know she had pain with chewing.
