Socket Bone Regeneration
Sun City West, AZ

Your teeth are incredibly strong. However, while they are the strongest substance in your body, they can still be damaged or experience decay. When these issues arise, the ideal solution is to restore them. Restoring damaged teeth typically involves the use of a crown. If the damage is too severe, though, the tooth may be beyond repair. In these situations, the best course of action is to extract the tooth and replace it. When teeth are extracted, they leave behind empty sockets. These empty spaces in your jaw can cause complications. At Solutions Dental Implants, we can fill empty sockets with socket bone regeneration.

Do I Need to Have a Tooth Extraction?

Your teeth do some important jobs. They are responsible for biting, chewing, and controlling airflow when you speak. They contribute to a beautiful, confident smile and even play an integral role in the health and shape your jawbone. For these reasons, it is always preferable to save damaged teeth. However, this is not always possible. When teeth are damaged beyond repair, the best solution is to extract them. Common reasons for extractions include
•  Teeth that are damaged below the gum line.
•  Teeth that are split in half or shattered.
•  Severe tooth decay.
•  Advanced stages of gum disease, where the stability of the teeth is compromised.
•  Infections that cannot be treated with a root canal.
•  A tooth that has experienced root canal failure and cannot be retreated.

The Importance of Saving Tooth Sockets

When a tooth is extracted, an empty space is left behind. The stimulation that the tooth once provided is also lost. Without this stimulation, the bone begins to change shape; the surrounding teeth can begin to shift out of alignment and move into the empty space left behind by your extracted tooth. When your teeth begin to shift, this can lead to significant issues such as bruxism and TMD. With socket bone regeneration, we can fill in the empty space left behind by the extracted tooth, preserving the shape and strength of the jawbone and making dental implant placement much easier.

Socket Grafting

Socket grafting is a surgical procedure that involves taking bone grafting material from elsewhere in your body and placing it into the empty sockets. Bone harvested from your own body, called an autograft, ensures that the bone placed in the empty socket is living. This means that the bone tissues can fuse together, helping to regenerate new bone tissue. We can also use bone graft substitutes, such as bone morphogenic proteins or demineralized bone matrix, which can help to stimulate the production of new tissue.

L-PRF for Socket Regeneration

Socket regeneration can also be done using L-PRF, or leukocyte platelet-rich fibrin. L-PRF is a product made from a sample of your blood. Its job is to aid in healing by providing additional platelets to the site to stimulate more tissue regeneration. L-PRF is made by spinning a small sample of your blood in a centrifuge. Centrifugation separates out the parts of your blood. As it spins, coagulation occurs in the center of the sample as a fibrin network forms. This fibrin network traps the platelets. The fibrin clots are removed and pressed, forming thin membranes that can be placed over a socket graft or over the empty socket to help stimulate the production of new bone.
